Unhappy Can't get a insurance - Just moved to Ireland

Hello all,

after going through the painful process to get my provisional A license and lgbt, just learned that the insurance companies won't cover me.

I'm buying a Suzuki GSX 600 and got these replies from the companies:

Liberty - Won't cover me in that bike unless I got the full license
Carole Nash - Won't cover me until I complete 2 years as Ireland resident

WTF!

DO you know any company which will cover me?

Thank you!

sorry it is a GSXR

Anyway, Carole and Nash won't cover me in any bike before I complete 2 years living here. Is it right? What are my options?

You could try Aon/Axa (same company) ask them if they would insure you if you took out the Aon skills assessment. Chances are the guy you did your I.B.T. with will also assess you and give you an additional Aon certificate of skills assessment. you should ring and ask them.

I find it hard to believe that insurance companies will not insure you on a less powerful bike. You should ask for quotation on a bandit 600 or Fazer 600 for example and see how you get on.
Principal are another insurance company, but they have no interest in noobies!! only experienced drivers.
Let us know how you get on..

Principal might also be worth a try

Unfortunately - previous insurance history from outside the EU is more usually ignored by Irish (and EU in general) insurers - as there's no common framework.

That said, it might be worth trying to get a statement from your previous insurer to state you have N years of claims-free biking .. it might help.
Also - if you haven't already, talk to a human at the various brokers - the online systems are for the very simple cases, and don't have any allowances for stuff that's "non-standard"

Adelaide used to accept NCB from outside of Ireland.. try AXA, see how it goes. Definitely get a letter of NCB from your insurer from Brazil. Principal might work with you on this...

Do you think I will have more lucky if I buy a XJ6?
The XJ6 has a group 12 (out of a maximum of 17) insurance rating.
This is a typical rating for standard road bikes like the GSX, GSF, CB*F, ER*

The GSX-R 600 is rated group 15 and the GSX-R 1000 has the
maximum rating of group 17.

Sports bikes are difficult to insure unless you have a full
licence and some claim-free history. A standard road bike
like the XJ6 should be relatively easy to insure.

There are five insurers in the Irish market.

Liberty, CN, Principal, Axa and MCE. MCE have announced
their intention to withdraw from the Irish market.

Talk to them all. Beware of any errors or misunderstandings.
CN are prone to making errors/mistakes. Liberty are even worse.
Five years after the changes to the driver licensing rules, they are still
struggling to understand the difference between A1,A2 and A.

Good advice from stevenjhodnett. A riding assessment
can make a big difference to the cost of insurance and the
range of bike you can get insured on, particularly with
Liberty and Axa.

Last time I looked, Liberty and Aon/Axa used their own
unique assessment form.

Good luck. Let us know how you get on with it.

I have a Dragstar 400 on a provisional but I managed to get insured with Liberty. Maybe cause I did it online? Cause I'm Female? Cause it's a smaller bike? Cause I said I'd do less miles? Who knows,... And I worked at AVIVA HO for 20 years!

cause it's a dragarse 400 that's why! Female would probably increase the premium given the skillset involved.....

Can you get insured on your Brazilian license?

When I moved from Canada, I called around a load of places. One of the guys at Principal quoting me actually suggested it. I was aloud to ride on it for a full year before need an Irish license, which is loads of time to get everything done. In the meantime I was able to get insurance for the ZX10 at a somewhat reasonable price.

I bet it'll be a novelty for you, riding a bike without worrying if someone is going to take it from you at gunpoint (unless you moved to Cork)
