Give the battery a good charge.
Is it starting in neutral?
Is the fuel pump priming?
Is it turning over at all?

Sounds like the neutral switch/gear position sensor might be dodgy.
Does it start OK if you pull the clutch in with stand up?

I think the immobiliser light is supposed to continue to flash after you take the key out... dunno how long for.

It's the neutral/gear indicator sensor or wiring.
Its located just above the sprocket...

It's the gear position sensor alright, I've read that sometimes cleaning it is enough but you can get a second hand one for 20 or 30 euro
Not worth putting a second hand one in if they are anything like most suzukis,
mine is behind the clutch basket, about four hours work getting in and out, may fit a new one for the sake of the few quid

Yeah those gear indicators give a lot of grief...if the bike won't show a neutral light it won't start from memory. If battery's draining you might be able to trace it back to a bad rectifier too
