Default Just wont engage gear at low revs - FZ1

Bit of a stupid one here, basically the bike will not change gear anything below 3-4000 revs. Now maybe I shouldn't be changing gear that low down but you know yourself in traffic you cant be going down the keys of the liffey in 1st gear all the way or you will need a new tank of petrol each day. It feels like it just doesn't want to change gear and sometimes just plain and simply I cant change gear like its being blocked!

Now the higher the rev the smoother it is to engage gear anything over 4000 revs and its smooth as butter so I cant see it being a the linkage, oil, the clutch cable or whatever but sure what do I know?

I recall the R1 had a very similar issue but didn't take notice of it because I thought its a sports bike, it wasn't made for trolling around doing low speeds in traffic but now its got me thinking

Since the FZ1 is a similar engine is this just the way it is or what's the craic? Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Correct chain tension and correct clutch adjustment account for 98% of all gearshift difficulties. Start there - both simple home maintenance tasks.

Linkages.
Gearbox issues also add an extra 12%
And not knowing how to change gear also makes up another 50%
I think there are more, but I can't think of them, but I do know they all add up to 218%, so it must be a common thing.

Check gear shift linkages. If the bearings are seized it will give such symptoms. Clean and grease

Try to tighten the clutch cable and see... On higher rpm I am not using the clutch at all and it shifts perfectly so this can explain why you can shift smoothly on higher rpm as you don't need a clutch that much but it is well needed on low rpm...

there seems to be a drag in the cluch, its not clearing properly,
may be a warped clutch disk or something to that affect

If the cable is stretched it will cause that exact issue

I had a similar issue on ZX-6R years ago.
It turned out to be the gear change linkages.

Sounds very similar.
The stacked box on this R1-derived engine mean the linkage has a fairly odd routing, so check all of that first.

Bit of a long shot, but I would look at the simple things first. If your clutch lever has a span adjuster I would try moving the lever in and out to see if it makes any difference to the gearchange.
Thought I had a dodgy gearbox but a mates kid, who I let sit on the bike, had adjusted the lever from setting 5 to 1 so obviously the clutch wasnt disengaging properly when changing gear.
