Only do a few runs a year and they are the same few every year, the numbers on each of these runs are falling a bit each year ( a lot to do with the state of the country not peoples generosity

) but I have noticed there are a lot of people just trying to cash in on the generosity of those involved in bikes with runs organised on weekends of long established runs, race weekends etc

I hope the charity run will long continue

bang on the buck carrigGSR, and noticeably a lot more in recent years outside the main annual ones like Revup4DSI and a few others. I think most would rather favour Runs that go directly to locally based charities just like the Annual Toy Runs to the Refuge in Rathmines or the Breffni Home up Longford way - the Sprit of the original Runs

Mods had good replies there!
1 Charity starts at home and people just dont have the spare cash they had only a short time ago!
last bank holiday weekend temple bar was empty, says enough to me!
its is also expensive enough to do with the price of juice + entry fee.
lads I used to go out with every week havnt got the juice money and some dont even have insurance at the mo!

on top of hard time there is a few on every week!

in a nut shell bikers need to be going else where to raise funds because good hearted bikers just dont have it no more!

go up the park tomorrow with buckets and pocket rape the fancy cage owners!

I've been involved with the organisation of the Women's Refuge Centre Toy Run since its inception almost 20 years ago and have supported and helped run bike runs for various bike or biker related (some for biker's offspring etc.) causes ever since. In 2005 when our own little one was born with Down Syndrome we as a family were quite frankly in a bit of a mess emotionally, and needed support & guidance, both of which we received in abundance from Down Syndrome Ireland. As such and after seeing how badly off they were for funding (no Government backing unlike 99% of foreign charities in Ireland) I decided as a dad to try and help. As such myself and a few other dad's (all bikers) put Rev-up4DSI together. Seven years later we are still running it and it's going well. I like to think though that its a bikers gig that raises much needed funds rather than a fundraising gig to attract bikers, hence why we put so much effort into selecting the venue, routes etc and once you show up on the event you don't pay to enter raffles, the poker run etc. etc as you have already more than done your bit.

We work hard to attract corporate sponsors such as BMW Motorrad, Pole Position Travel etc in order that the funds that the bikers raise go to DSI not on expenses where possible (every year we strive to hand over at least 90% of funds raised) as this in my opinion is our way of being responsible with people's donations.

I for one am eternally grateful for the support of the biking public of our cause and only wish the Government would cough up so that events like Rev-up4DSI are no longer necessary but until that day arrives (if it ever does) I will continue to ask people to help as and where they can. I do also out of my own pocket help any of the other causes that fellow members are supporting as and where I can and I have never refused an ask for advise from anyone trying to set up a genuine event.

Just to put a bit of perspective on things, children born with DS require a huge amount of early intervention services and supports such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy etc. and the Government & Health Service have a duty of care to provide these services, unfortunately as most parents of children with special needs in Ireland will tell you this doesn't happen. As such kids speech will be totally delayed as will their social and physical skills, putting them even further behind their typically developing peers. DSI at branch level (25 branches nationwide, all voluntary which some of you have visited and can testify to the work they do) supply speech & language programmes, occupational therapy, playball sessions which teach young kids motor skills and social skills, as well as supports for older children and adults, not to mention the rest of their families who also may & often do require counselling or support. This is all before we even get a chance to try and lobby Govt., HSE, Education Dept. and all other depts to try and get basic civil rights for our kids that parents of typically developed kids take for granted, schools still can and do refuse kids with special needs placings, not to mention that kids with heart & lung conditions are having their medical cards taken off them even though they require round the clock medication.

I fully appreciate how hard times are for all due to our wonderful Government and their protection of the crooked banks and developers that have brought our country and its people to their knee's and as such I know not everyone can support a cause (I'm flat broke so I know how the rest of you are) but I as Robyn's dad am grateful to one and all who have supported DSI financially, by wearing a badge/sticker/t-shirt, by shaking a bucket, by offering services and/or time or just by being a friend to my family and indeed all our member familes around the country, so thanks.

the goverment here should hang there heads in shame for there lack of help towards dsi and other groups. i too have a ds sister and any body that has a ds child should cheresh them because they are the most wonderfull kids to be around, so magnets keep up the great work you do with dsi
