Default Triumph Street Triple R fork oil replacement.

Hey guys, I'm replacing the fork oil in the STR. The Haynes manual says 484ml capacity, I've put in about 450ml so far. And it says 93mm height, but mine is at about 40mm height already which means I've to remove a good bit again. I pumped the damper rod loads of times when expelling the old oil and also as I' ve been filling it. What's the deal?

Cheers, Mick.

Airgap is measured with spring out. Did u pump it leave it to drain a good while?

Yeah, I did yeah, and spring is out alright. Is the capacity for a completely dry fork, like when new, without the damper or anything inside maybe?

Yeah, I just assumed the capacity would get me there or there abouts with the height. Didn't expect such a difference.

Did you dismantle the forks completely? Can be a good bit left in it if you don't.

Yeah you could be right. Was watching a Dave Moss video where he took out the compression damper and all. I just inverted it and pumped the damper.

Never done it myself, so take this with a grain of salt but yeah... all vids I've seen they always take the whole thing apart, that might be the difference you're finding there.

Cheers,
Rami

Yeah, just went with the level and ignored the capacity. The oil coming out looked nice and clean so no need to totally strip them I reckon. Maybe next time.

No need to take the whole thing apart if you're just changing the oil. I would say the difference is the coating of oil that reminded. You'll never get rid of that anyway, unless you're going to take every single piece apart and clean them all. No need for anything close to that if you're just putting fresh oil in. Air gap is what's important at the end of the day.
