Motorbike: 990 smt
Default KTM 990 smt

What are they like for daily commuting? And are they good craic then for a weekend spin? Basically just want an opinion of them as an all rounder

There was one in the shop with the big windows recently but itís sold already, just seen mega bikes have one now too. Very tempted

I have my one a few years, the fun bike ive owned as it does everything I want it to do. Very comfortable. Not as quick as a sportsbike or anything but great fun, and very forgiving suspension.
Just make sure it was well serviced and a few small things to look out for on them, otherwise great machines. 80k kms on mine and not a bother.

Nice one lads, thanks. Love the ZX6r but something which is a bit more comfortable for commuting on and a bit more practical for weekends away is beginning to get appealing

Only have the fecking ZX6r too

They are a great bike, but you need to keep on top of oil and filters and general maintenance to the book. They do have a habit of giving some grief, just like any performance bike would, clutch slave cylinders, and general oil leaks are quite common but easily fixed.... Keep it clean and treated against corrosion too and you have yourself a bike you will enjoy for years. Very entertaining, and hugely capable machines.

One thing you might want to consider if you're doing big miles is the fuel consumption. My SD absolutely guzzles fuel. Admittedly I only really use it for fun so it does get spanked a bit but still.

I just bought one, a 2010 smt, so far so great, am commuting on it and find it more
Comfy than sv1000s, though it is pretty aggressive on the throttle, have had a few hairy moments already but that’s down to me and not the bike, I’d say go for it!!!

I had the 990 SM years ago, same engine etc.

A remap by Gary in mototuning.ie had it running sweet as a nut. I'd also recommend blanking off the SAS system and fitting a rottweiler airbox mod.

After the above, once you keep on top of the servicing (use decent oil) you'll be reet. That KTM was the most reliable bike I ever owned.

I'm actually considering an SMT for the commute, just waiting on the right one to pop up at the right price. I was 3 months looking for the SM, but in the end it paid off.

Have had a few SMT 990s decent bikes very suitable for irish roads one clutch slave cylinder replaced other than that no issues...1200 monster a nice bike too but higher price and poor residuals...there is an issue on right side footrest if you have size 10 or bigger feet your heel will be resting on the exhaust!

And you canít lean the bike over because you canít put the ball of your foot on the pegs due to the same shit design so enjoy going straight I guess!

Motorbike: 950 smr
Modifications: Overpriced power parts...
Default Re: KTM 990 smt

I commuted solid on by 950smr for about 2 years with absolutely no problems at all (60km a day). Only issue I had was the frequent fuel stops due to the smr's smaller tank and also the bit of wind resistance due to me not wanting to put a screen on the bike which shouldn't be a problem by the looks of that bike.
On top of that they are absolutely cracking bikes for the weekend spins on the twisty roads! I think the fuel pump and electrics are the things to watch out for on the LC8 models though! With regards to the servicing, I found it handy enough. Oil and filter every 5000-7500 km (maybe a bit overcautious) and valves every 15,000. Mine has over 50,000 km and the valves have always been spot on! They tend to use a bit of oil, but its not too bad once you keep them topped up! Hope the above helps, but I would say go for it! I may be a bit biased though as I think they are stonking bikes
