It is done to give the brain a chance to recover from a big trauma, without having to contend with outside stimulus. It keeps the risk of seizures to a minimum as well. My dad was put into one for a fortnight after a brain haemorrhage nearly snuffed him in 2004. No one can say for definite what the chances of a recovery are until the coma has been reversed.

Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery. Strength to his family at this horrible time.
