Default V-Strom tank lock

Lads this is now starting to p1ss me off. 2012 DL650 I bought end of last year in great nick from the UK. Running great but me and the tank lock are having issues.

Maybe Iím retarded but maybe someone has an idea. Iím not on drugs by the way - the lock on the tank will not open randomly. I havenít done massive mileage since I got her but itís happened a few times and once I had to nurse it home as I couldnít open it at a garage.

Iíve gotten into the habit of testing it now before I go out. Was out this afternoon. Tried before I headed off. 2/3 miles to the station and the fucking thing wouldnít open. Had it on the centre stand, I can press it down to take the pressure off the catch - no joy. Key wonít turn. Put it on the side stand and it opened as it that should make any difference!!!

WTF is going on, this was with the newer key as I swapped them given the last time. Any ideas?? New barrel for it?? She has 48k Kam on it so has had a few fills. Could it be worn that badly? Whatís the best way to clean it out and lube it?

Get A new cap. I had a blade with massive miles and had to throw the cap in the bin and fit a new (second hand) cap.

Might try WD40 or something like that. Maybe good old fashioned 3 in 1. It’s the newer 2012 model.

Spray oil with PTFE , insert/remove key repeatedly then insert and try to turn it.Petrol vapour can sometimes dry a lock out leaving it sticky.

Sound will try that. When it opens itís sweet, no resistance at all and the other times itís like the barrel is seized.

Also try lubricate the mechanism itself, the lock cylinder may fine.
