Default Trip to Porto

Here's the craic. The college mates are planning a holiday for after we finish (end of may-ish) and we're thinking porto. I'll probably have to leave the country long term in august for work, so this'd be my last chance for a nice tour before i go. Looking at a couple of options.

1. Rosslare - cherbourg, and 2 good days driving to porto. Have my hollier there with the mates and then a few days solo back towards Bilbao/santander and up home through england.

2: Dublin - Holyhead, Plymouth - Bilbao on the way out and return from Cherbourg or Roscoff. Main advantage of this is possibility of leaving on an evening sailing to Holyhead, overnighting the drive to plymouth, overnighter to bilbao and arriving in time to blast on down to Porto in time for the evening....I think! Way back will be a more leisurely affair up the coast.

Also a couple of combinations possible of a hybrid of the 2 options. Anybody done similar, or have any advice re: time/money trade off? What I did last year was mile-munch on the way over, and take my time on the way back, worked well I thought. Anyone?!

Too far to travel in a short space of time, spend a bit of extra time in Spain around Burgos or Salamanca and you wont regret it, spent about 10 days near Porto two years ago, its beautiful but you wont appreciate it in the time frame that you have, Braga not to far from Porto is beautiful

Took the John Deere

Spain is cheaper for petrol, when in Portugal avoid the motorways, bikes are classed in the same category as those other 4 wheeled yokes

Was thinking that alright, but to give you an idea, I got to the French Alps in 2 days last year, spent a week there staying with a friend and doing a couple of day trips, then spent 5 days driving on back over to cherbourg. Granted, I didn't see much on the way over, but I loved the trip. Was thinking of doing similar this year, but wanted advice.

The more I think about it, the more I might just fly there on the cheap and get a nice 4 or 5 days riding on the Atlantic coast of France at another time during the summer. Also, this holiday will be a fairly drunken affair so the bike could just sit there for the week or so, which would be a waste killing myself to get it there. it's all a bit up in the air, just feeling things out at the moment really.

Fook me...just googled that sandwich...i'll be living on them I reckon!

Have done the Dublin - Faro trip a few times in a cage. Most of the trip is the same. Went Roslare - Cherbourg and Roslare - Roscoff. Was a 10am till 10 pm drive one day and a 9am till 5pm drive the next. You might want to take three days to do it though or your nuts might be useless if you have any plans on using them down there. Stayed in north spain both times. Like bogman said, Burgos is beautiful, well worth a look. In terms of juice, i spent 350 - 400 quid. Porto is a slightly shorter trip and the bike would cost half as much on juice if ur behaving urself.

Did Porto a few years ago with mates. Me on VFR 800, them on GSXR 600 and 1000 via Roscoff. Don't miss out on the Picos de Europa. Beautiful landscape and something like 70 miles of twisties. This was the highlight of the trip. Would love to do it again.
