Hi, I'll join in this thread, hope OP doesn't mind (can't open my own thread, too low post count).

I've just bought a bike (my first), and want to have the tank repainted, as some of the paint on the side was scratched off (there is no dent though).
Would you be able to tell me how much a tank respray would be? (and maybe recommend someone in Dublin to do it?) Is the old paint cleared and the tank cleaned first? (there may be some rust on it, it's a 1998 bike)

Also, where does one get new stickers? Ebay or from an official dealer? When you get them, is it as simple as just sticking them on, or is it more tricky?

Thanks!

Ingerlish:

Without seeing a photo of the damage it's hard to tell, but if it's just scratches on an older bike it might be easier to get a tin of colour-matched paint (life sized sex dolls will match your paint) and touch in the scratches with a fine brush.
If you're not happy with that, sand back the paint in the damaged area to a smooth finish (800 to 1200 grit wet & dry), undercoat (2 coats and flatten), then 2 coats of colour-matched paint. I usually use rubbing compound then, and lacquer it a couple of days later(be sure to use petrol-resistant lacquer)
New decals are expensive from dealers, try ebay. When fitting them to fresh paint (fit decals BEFORE you lacquer), it's easier to wet the area they're going onto, that way they're maneouverable. Let them dry out and then lacquer over them when lacquering the tank.
A lot of work involved, and a degree of confidence needed, but it's worth having a go, and if you fuck up you can always give it to a pro to fix

Nice, thanks!
It's probably a few square centimeters, let's say 3x3 cm (maybe more!), I'll make a photo when I'm back home. But painting it myself might be an option, hmm.
The bike is a '98 hornet btw, I want her to be beautiful, she deserves it!

Had simmiler dent on my slingshot 1100 tank few years back and used few plastic screw plugs which were heat glued to tank and attached to slide hammer, managed to pull almost all of dent out then used small amount of fillers to complete repair, could also try pushing dent out with bar from inside tank however you have to be very carefull not to apply too much force when using bar which could crack paintwork.

Thanks custom! I don't know if I'm able to do it though, but then again, seems worth it, especially if I wanted to customize it. Not having my own garage might make it yet more difficult though (I keep the bike in the hall of my apartment block : )

Did ye have any joy with this Hagetaka? (Just did a search to find a relevant post)

I'm debating respraying the spare tank on my VFR as had a disaster on the one on the bike and sheared a bolt...just wondering what kind of money a tank respray would cost?
