Default Are Half or Beanie Helmets Legal

Hi.

I'm a new member on biker.ie and have just purchased my first scooter, a 50cc Aprilia Habana scooter. I want to get a helmet that fits under the seat but space is minimal.

I'm only going to use the bike for a 10 min spin to work or into town. I know that safety should come first but Ideally I would like to be able to store the helmet in the compartment under the seat.

Are these types of helmets legal in Ireland? I think that the certification to look out for is the DOT cert but can anyone confirm this. Is it safe to purchase one from ebay etc if they are certified etc.

Thanks.

As the yanks say if you have a 30 dollar head get a 30 dollar helmet, put a top box on your scooter and get a decent helmet.

But the answer you are looking for is:

DOT is US of A standard, which means, that has no CE mark which means that it's not for road use /in the EU states it is/.
As many of the lads with aftermarket exhausts on here would know

Once you've seen the damage to chin bar of a helmet from coming off at about 5 miles an hour, you'll realise that the option of sucking feed with a straw for 3 months is much better than the option of tube feeding directly into your tummy if you can't generate enuff sucking pressure because you left most of your mandible on the side of a footpath in the 10 mins it takes to get to work . . . . .

I don't mean to sound like a smart alec, but that's what's called straight talking.

I'm tempted to post pics.....

+1 Statistically your chin is the first thing to hit the ground , not the top of your head. Get a Full Face and bring the helmet into work with you. It'll impress the birds there

The diagrams above show the impact areas on crash-involved motorcycle helmets. (Source: Dietmar Otte, Hannover Medical University, Dept. of Traffic Accident Research, Germany.) Note that 35% of all crashes showed major impact on the chin-bar area. This means that if you ride with an open-face helmet, you are accepting only 65% of the protection that could be available to your head.

If you ride with a shorty or half helmet, you are accepting only 39% of the protection you could obtain. You are literally throwing away 61% of the protection you would have had had you chosen a full-face helmet.

And, of course, if you ride wearing a “novelty” helmet or no helmet at all then you have none of the protection you could have chosen.

watch this and then think about an open face helmet, read the description on the video,

"It was hot that day so I left my full-faced helmet at home and wore the open face helmet with jeans and a shirt. Oops!"

Beanie helmets are novelty only helmets and do not conform to any standard, Anything with an elasticated strap is not going to do anything for ya in the event of an off.
Buy a decent lid, and enough of this guff of storing it under the seat.
