Re: Wheres biking going ?

im 23 and after my fazer600 got totalled i decided it was too sensible for my age so got the gixxer. i only have a 15min drive into college in town every day so its completely impractical for the job but i wouldnt have anything else really although ive toyed with the idea of a supermoto. hopefully if i get any kind of decent job next year ill get one as well. ive no real use for my own car as im insured on both my parents cars anyway..

I don't know about anyone else but I can't seem to call a moped/scooter a motorbike no matter what size engine is in it. (no offense to those using them)

As for who uses what to commute, I use an r1 everyday, sold the cage for it,
Cost wise I don't know what sort of "decent" cage is only in the €120 a year tax bracket but mine was in the €900 a year bracket with 500bhp and I still wouldn't go back if I was payed to, insurance was the same as it is on the r1, and the fuel I go through in 2 weeks on the r1 I went through in a day in the cage.. What's faster - r1, what's more fun - r1, what costs less to run and maintain - r1.... Tis. No brainer :D

Re: Wheres biking going ?

Can't say I know any young fellas who have taken up biking in recent years. Two lads that I know are starting their IBT in the next week or so. One is in his early 30s, the other is probably around 50. Both of them had bikes in a previous life but they gave up biking a long time ago. The older lad is talking about getting either a cruiser or a classic bike. He wants a bike that will stand out from the crowd. For both of them, biking will be something entirely recreational. They're doing it just for fun. Can't say I see anything wrong with that. It's my main reason for having my bikes. Adventure bikes have really become popular in recent years, but TBH I can't stand the things. There's something about them that just turns me off. Now I'm sure most of them are fine bikes, but they're not for me, that's all. Sports/touring bikes would be my favourite type of bike. My priorities would be comfort, torque & acceleration rather than out-&-out top speed. I like sports bikes too, but they don't like me much. With my FUBAR back & knees I can barely sit on a Hornet or an R6. A long journey on either one would be out of the question for me. My Fazer is comfortable & powerful enough for me. I don't think I'll ever need all of it's 143BHP, but at least I know it's there. If I didn't have the Fazer I think I'd probably have a Blackbird.

At 32 my interest in adventure/ traillie type yolks hovers somewhere between zero and fook all.

Just done my first long weekend on the blackbird includeing M,N and R roads and dublin city commuting/filtering. And quiet honestly the only thing she would ever leave the shed for would be a ZZR14 or another Blackbird.
Moving ahead adding to the collection, the shed would see a "road kinda legal" track set up 636 for outright trouble making, something along the lines of a cg125 for throwing around the side on the cheap and tearing the sides of cages without worrying about damaging me fairings  and a cruiser for chillout spins.

At the moment I dont ever seen me on any adventures yolks of tourers

Its only going one way and thats where ALL the manufacturers are going!
its electric.
as far as the style of bike well thats a silly fuckin question!
everybody is different and will always want something different!
that why we all have different haircuts different favorite beer!
only thing that will vary your choice is age comfort and use!

yhup ... not far off a hundred quid spent on juice over the weekend, not counting the fill before i left to top up the tank, take that into account and factor what id need to fill the tank now i am probably closer to 150 quid:mad1:

Still even with weather friday when doing dublin-tralee it still would have been a shoite weekend in a cage tho :thumbsup2:

they will replace the petrol engine alright but the electric will replace them all!
beside they make a flawless torque curve, its not even a curve its a flat line on a dyno.
thats what they have tried to achieve with piston engines for years..
diesel engines are heavy fukkers to so they are never going to make great race bikes but as you see with the TTX electric bikes do.
all the eco nuts want to do away with all combustion engines..
only ones left in a few years will be hydrogen jobs!

The only problem with a diesel is that to make it go any faster than a push bike or a Harley, you have to stick a turbo on it, but then you need traction control fitted, and the boost would have to be controlled electronically to make it safe.

Diesel engines have come on a long way lately, and if the weight could be reduced enough, they'd be well suited to bikes... well, cruisers and tourers anyway. It would take a good petrol sports bike to out accelerate a diesel.

Re: Wheres biking going ?

i had my first big road bike in 1965 a norton 500 it cost me £40 , insurance was £45 from victor o rourke a norwich union agent the only insurance you could get , there was only 40 bikes 500cc or over insured in ireland at the time he told me , my wages were £6-10-6 after me stamp ,the point is , it was insurance that can kill biking , it happened again in i think around 2002 insurance went through the roof for young drivers , since then a lot of bike shops closed down , same pattern , in the 70s there was 6000 - 7000 new bikes sold a year , it dropped to less than 2000 by the early 80s insurance again , how many new bikes are been sold per year now ask any dealer , very few

Electric is the bollox... the technology has already overtaken the internal combustion engine, but batteries are the problem, they're dangerous.

Lead acid batteries are a waste of time... Lithium Polymer is where batteries are at the moment, but they're about as stable as a red head at rag week, and if they're overcharged or damaged or shorted or have too much of a current draw, they can explode.
