Regulator wiring worries
 
Story Lads and Lassies, just a quick question.
The Regulator Rectifier failed on my bike (85 Gsx 750ef) recently. I got a friend of mine to pick up a replacement from city spares, 50 euros happy days. The replacement regulator is a fair bit different in size and shape to the old one, but the bolt spacing is similar and it seems to fit. I crimp new spade connectors to the positive and negative wires, plug these and the and the other three (from the alternator) which already had connectors attached into the block connector, cross my fingers, fire it up. Success! its showing 14.5 Volts across the rev range from 1100rpm to 7000 as opposed to the 16.5 it had being showing before.

I have to drive the bike from Laois to Dublin in the next couple of days and i'm thinking to myself.
when I've tested bikes and cars before the reading from the battery would show 13.5 to say 14.5 depending how high the revs were. However on the bike now it was 14.5 rock steady all the time. I even got the girlfriend to rev it up good and proper so I could hold the meter on and get a good reading.

I guess what I'm asking in as long winded way is. Is there a right or wrong position to connect the three wires from the alternator, they weren't numbered on the replacement regulator and the broken one had a nice idiot proof connector block.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Apparently not. Had a GS1100 way back and it suffered the same r/r fate. Relied on info from gsresources at the time... Stuff like [URL="http://gsarchive.bwringer.com/storagecliff/images/r-r_replacement.pdf"]http://gsarchive.bwringer.com/storagecliff/images/r-r_replacement.pdf[/URL]

There's no wrong way to connect the three phases from the stator.
Did you check the voltage at the three phases?

Hi Gixxer No i haven't. Do you mean to check the Voltage when the bike is running?

It's always best to do it that way. Then you won't get a reading of zero volts :D
And remember it's AC, not DC.

Is the replacement you got a newer mosfet type?

Hi K7, no its an older regulator from a Fazer 600 I believe. I tried to post pics but was unable to. it looks very similar to the link that Bsanrr posted. I'm just a little worried as it seemed to give such a steady output.

Does the part number start with an 'F' or 'FH'?
