For a start Suzukis SV650 is group 9 or 10 but certainly not group 7......

Thanks, does sound a bit suspect alright (I blame motomax.ie (To view pics on this biker's forum - your post count must be 2 or greater.) website for that info, have transalp 400 as 5 not 6 as well), will check bbg when I get home and amend :)

Okay googled and it's a 10

None of the grp 12's were listed, safe to say anything remotely interesting is of course AXA grp 12.

Doolitte, what site did you find the groups on? I can only find UK sites.

Technician

Bikeworld.ie (To view pics on this biker's forum - your post count must be 2 or greater.) also publish AXA insurance groups in their 'New Bikes' section.

By looking at irish dealer's websites (got some from bbg website).
To view pics on this biker's forum - your post count must be 2 or greater. (To view pics on this biker's forum - your post count must be 2 or greater.)
To view pics on this biker's forum - your post count must be 2 or greater. (To view pics on this biker's forum - your post count must be 2 or greater.) (though their listings a bit unreliable!)
To view pics on this biker's forum - your post count must be 2 or greater. (To view pics on this biker's forum - your post count must be 2 or greater.) (they had the correct sv group)
Also will fill in more from Bike Buyers Guide listings. The problem with their list is that it only covers new bikes officially sold on the irish market, so no imports/older bikes.

Might be a fly in the ointment for my list. Do dealers general list AXA or CN groups? Or do they both operate off the same list?

Forgot about broke world, will add some more listings. Man, it's quiet at work today :sleep1:

all wrong, the GS500 is group 7 and the NC30 is group 11, the firestorm is group 14, the B12 is group 15, the VFR is group 17.

the only half way reliable site for these grouping is here (To view pics on this biker's forum - your post count must be 2 or greater.), go to bike reviews and then into the buy-a-bike database - this is the only site officially endorsed by CN

Technician

Spoonman, you are referring to CN ins groups. The original poster refers to Hibernian/AXA ins groups.

Will actually the original poster subtitled the post CN insurance groups  He will probably edit it now :whistling:

So AXA go on a scale to 12 and CN use the same scale here as in UK? Handy link that so, bike reviews and all .

Technician
27th September 2005, 01:54 PM
Ahem...looks like you got the two groups interwoven somehow :D

Wish I was getting AXA insurance group at the equivalent CN price...i.e. my AXA group 12 ZX9R insured for the equivalent CN group 12 CB500 or sumfin:P

 At least it occupied a quiet morning...

If CN use the same groupings here as in UK, that link spoonman had is all I need to know. From the bikes I know it seems to check out. I think the list I wrote are the right AXA groupings now..maybe

Spoonman

@techie, CN was mentioned in the original post aswell and they're the groupings i'm sure of - apologies for any confusion.

note: the majority of the ins groupings on that site are correct but there are a few errors such as the SP1 being listed as group 14 instead of group 17

on another line, i'm still a tad doubtful about some of those AXA groupings.

CB500 (unless that's a super4 rather than a twin or something...) in the same group as the PAN??? ...they're not great but they're not *that* slow... :P

most of the others look ok though although i had expected that AXA would carry of HIB's groupings but it doesn't appear that they have.

If you're staying less than 6 months in Ireland, it should be no problem driving with foreign tax and insurance. Even if here 10 or 11 months, you could probably claim that you have entered the country more than once, and your official residence is still the country where your bike is insured (e.g. Lithuania). However, if you're here for more than a year, and employment records (such as tax paid or PRSI) can prove this, then you could be in trouble if caught. This is cause you will then be considered officially resident in Ireland.

Of course you are not too likely to get caught. A friend of mine from the north was living and working in Dublin for years, driving his northern reg car. He was once approached by a man in the Liffey Valley car park, asking him whether he was working in Dublin. Not thinking, he answered yes, and the man then said that he was from customs and excise (or something similar) and that he should have a southern reg plate for his car, along with southern tax and insurance. He was meant to follow up on it, but I'm not sure what happened after that.

Sure fair play to the lad if he can get away with it. I was at a rally in Tipp a couple of months back and I counted 4 (without looking too hard) either Latvian or Lithuanian reg'd bikes ranging from a Bandit 12, SV1000, Pre '00 Blade and an old GT550.....

there's about 20 Lithuanian cars in Athlone for about 12 months now and no sign of them to be re-reg'd

Nice one. I'd keep the Lithuanian plate as long as you can if I were you. I presume you still have an address in Lithuania. Just in case you're ever in an accident (god willing you won't be), then your insurance will still be valid as long as you can convince the Lithuanian insurance company that you're still resident there.

I'm currently living in Germany. If I were to come back to Ireland in the near future, I'd try to keep the German reg as long as possible too. Hopefully when I do transfer to Irish insurance, I'll have built up a bit of an NCB.

I certainly don't know the ins and outs of Lithuanian insurance contracts :wink1:

I'm living in Germany, and also have a green card from a German insurance company, insuring me throughout the EU, and some other countries as well (such as Ukraine, Turkey and Iran if I remember correctly). However AFAIK, this is only valid so long as I remain a resident of Germany.

So technically, the insurance MIGHT no longer be valid if you no longer have resident status in the country of insurance. However proving that your not a resident is pretty difficult. Especially as you come from that country and probably have family there.

It would probably be more difficult for me to convince Irish Gardai that I am a resident of Germany if I was back in Ireland for over 6 months as I'm Irish. But in your case, I reckon you'll be fine (but I'm not a lawyer, so this isn't a legal opinion :shades: )

Bingo. What the Lithuanian insurance company doesn't know won't hurt it, eh? :kwasny:
