Hi All,

I race sc, motocross enduro etc. I have a prov road licence and have never been on the road before. Im 21 but have 10 years or so bike experience. What bikes are fun to learn on yet easy to insure for someone of 21?

Regards

Steve

unfortunately with regards to insurance (the limiting factor starting off), unless youve got some ncb, your current experience aint gonna matter to em :(

I'd say most you're gonna get insured on is gonna be a group 2 bike (possibly group 3), though maybe things are getting better these days..

some group 2s of interest:

yamaha tzr50
aprillia rs50
honda nsr80/75
honda nsr125 ( restricted '02 onwards)
honda varadero xl125
yamaha tdr125
hyosung gt125r
honda cg125
yamaha ybr125
yamaha tw125
cruiser style ya got the marauder, intruder, and eliminator (possibly more, dunno much bout em)

probably more Ive missed, but some ideas... ;)

you do not have to stick to the 125 class... ie the bros qualifies for under 33 bhp, so you can drive it with a prov license

Ohh Good God...the words pulling and ambrosia spring to mind. There must be something tasty in group 3/4. What group is Aprilia rs125 OR ZXR250 in? And even those two will bore me to death.

rs125 is group 7 or 8 afaik
zxr250... I think is group 4
bros400, cbr250, restricted 600's group 5
hornet 250, other restricted 600's ( ;) ) group 6

gl in your search anyway

CN groups are different to the Quinn and AON ones.

yea, those are all AON groups, CN are different, and quinn are probably different again... :(

just the aon groups are the most widely used (on price lists etc)

Cbr250 or Hornet 250 or even an VFR400 are all good learner bikes with enough go to keep you interested for a while. Dont know how insurance would be on them for a 21 year old. Would suggest getting licence first to open more options. But its NCB/Age combo that really does it for insurance now.

Yeah I'd say you'll get rode on insurance whatever you go for Steve unfortunately - in saying that, if you take the hit at some stage (ie now) it will allow you get up onto proper craic machines...I'd say once you dont go for anything too flash starting out...Bros...and apply for your licence straight away you'll be grand...:thumbsup2:

Im 24 and couldnt find a 250 they'd insure me on :(

since youve got the experience under your belt, try and get onto one of the instructers that will do the Aon tests on their own school bikes, might help with the quotes. Or apply for your full license asap, and hold off getting a bike till you pass it (again, using school bikes for pretests etc)

Sorry Blanc its not an age thing.

If your dad got that deal he must have held a bike license previously.

For a first timer it makes no difference what age they are.

If joe bloggs regardless of age appiles for a bike license for time round he will have to go thru all the same shit you are about to have to go thru.

Theory test et al

I understand your woe loads of years experience but counts for nowt on the road.

Hate to say but I agree with the system, it really means that just about everyone who wishes to ride a bike on the road has to go thru the "system".

Much better that the "cage" system where rich daddies son can drive any cage he wishes regardless of experience.:thumbsup2:
